Philco Model 84B Cathedral Radio, second style 1935
1935 Philco Model 84B Cathedral Radio, second style
This was my Dad's, and a nice example of one of the most popular table radios in the late 1930s. The second style, Model 84B was Philco's Baby Grand price-leader for 1935 and was one of the least expensive such sets available at the time. It was often promoted by Philco as a second radio for the home.
This has been in my possession for ~60 years, I used it in the late '60s but today it only powers up and hums. I rigged a 10m dipole antenna and I 'think' I can almost hear the super-het whistle when tuning, but no signal. All 4 tubes light up and the filament and plate voltages measure OK. I think if you want to re-cap the chassis it just might work. It is all original and intact and an easy restoration project if you're inclined.
The 84B's chassis is a 4-tube AC-powered regenerative superhet, covering standard broadcast and the lower end of the old police & amateur band (540 to 1740kc). The tube line-up is 77 (mix/LO), 77 (IF/2nd det), 42 (af power amp) and 80 (rectifier).
The cabinet is in decent condition, as are the knobs. The grill-cloth needs replacement. I won't vouch for the speaker because I haven't removed it, or the chassis from the cabinet.
The radio is 14 inches wide 8-1/2 inches tall and 6 inches deep. Weighs about 10lbs.
