P. Courti Mahogany Stick Barometer, Mid-19th Century Made in Exeter, England
Here is a fine mid-19th century mahogany stick barometer in very good condition. It measures 36" x 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" and is marked "P Courti, Exeter" It reads from 27 to 31 inches of mercury and is calibrated in 0.1-inch increments. There is no vernier and the column is unadjustable, I would imagine this model was intended to wealthy gentry rather than academic or scientific use. The well is intact and contains some mercury, the column is empty, It could easily be refilled and made working. The thermometer is mercury, intact and accurate. The wood finish is nice and overall this is in excellent shape. The only defect is at the top of the column, the cap covering the sealed top of the glass column is missing. This is visible in the images. This instrument is in good condition and only needs the column and well refilled to return to working order.
Courti, (alt. Corti) was an extended family of Italian descent that specialized in producing such glass instruments as thermometers, barometers, hydrometers, and hygrometers in Exeter, England. Paul Corti is known to have been working at No. 5 Market Street, Exeter, from 1830 to 1850.
